Most accounting software was never designed for this

The tools most US small businesses end up using were built to be generic. They do invoices and expenses well, then hand you a spreadsheet export and wish you luck with everything that actually matters in April.

So the work gets split. One tool for the books. A separate payroll service. A spreadsheet for sales tax. A folder of receipts. And a bookkeeper who spends the first three weeks of every year putting it back together before anyone can even start on the return.

Kangaroo ERP US was built the other way round. We started from the forms — Schedule C, 1065, 1120-S, 941, 940, W-2, 1099-NEC — and worked backwards to the chart of accounts. Every account you post to already knows which line of which form it belongs on. That single decision is why the year-end stops being a project.

If any of this sounds like your year, you're in the right place

These are the five things US business owners tell us take the most time and cause the most doubt. Each one is a module in the product, not a promise.

You sell into several states and you're not sure where you owe sales tax

Since the Wayfair decision, selling into a state can create an obligation there without any office or staff. Every state sets its own threshold, and some count transactions instead of dollars.

Kangaroo tracks your sales by state against each state's own threshold and tells you where you stand — with time to register before it matters.

You run an S corp and want the salary/distribution split done properly

Getting the officer compensation right is what makes the S corp election worth having. It's also the number most owners are least sure about.

The product runs the payroll, tracks the compensation against the profit, and gives you the figures to discuss with your CPA in one screen.

Your quarterly estimates are a rough guess every three months

The safe harbor is a precise rule: the lesser of 90% of this year or 100% of last year — 110% if last year's AGI was over $150,000.

Kangaroo computes both routes from your live numbers, tells you which is lower, and shows the exact amount and date for each of the four instalments.

Payroll takes half a day and you still double-check it by hand

Federal withholding, Social Security up to the wage base, Medicare with the additional tier, FUTA, plus your state's own unemployment, disability and paid-leave contributions.

One click produces the run, and every paycheck opens up into the full IRS worksheet so you can see exactly where each number came from.

You bought equipment and don't know how to write it off

Recovery class, convention, Section 179, bonus depreciation — four decisions that change the deduction substantially, made once and locked in for years.

Enter the asset and Kangaroo shows the full year-by-year schedule, with Section 179 and bonus applied, before you save it.

One setup question, and the rest configures itself

You tell us two things: how your business is organized under state law, and how you elected to be taxed federally. Those are separate answers — an LLC can be taxed four different ways — and getting them right is what makes everything downstream correct.

  1. 1

    Your chart of accounts appears

Seeded for your exact tax classification. A sole proprietor gets an owner's draw account; an S corp gets the accumulated adjustments account. Every expense account already carries its form line.

  2. 2

    Your filing calendar generates

Built from your fiscal year end and whether you have employees or contractors. Real dates, moved for weekends and federal holidays.

  3. 3

    Your state rules load

Withholding structure, unemployment wage base, disability and paid-leave contributions, sales tax rate and nexus thresholds for wherever you operate.

  4. 4

    You start working

Invoice, record expenses, run payroll. Everything posts to the same ledger, and the returns are an aggregation of what's already there.

What's included from day one

Every plan includes every form your entity type requires. There is no per-filing fee and no filing-season surcharge.

Invoicing with real sales tax

Rates applied per jurisdiction with the sourcing rule of the state the sale belongs to. Exemption certificates tracked per customer, with expiry dates.

Double-entry bookkeeping

Cash or accrual basis, applied properly — on cash basis revenue is recognized when you're paid, not when you invoice. Trial balance always in balance.

Full US payroll

Federal withholding by the Publication 15-T percentage method, FICA with wage-base tracking, FUTA, and each state's own unemployment, disability and paid-leave contributions.

Sales tax nexus tracking

Your sales measured against every state's threshold, with an alert while you still have time to register.

Federal returns

Schedule C and SE, Form 1065, 1120 and 1120-S with Schedule K-1, the quarterly 941, the annual 940, W-2 and W-3, 1099-NEC and 1096, and 1040-ES estimates.

Fixed assets on MACRS

Recovery classes, half-year and mid-quarter conventions, the switch to straight line, Section 179 and bonus depreciation, with the schedule visible before you commit.

Vendor and contractor management

W-9 tracking, automatic 1099 eligibility by tax classification, backup withholding handled, and the year's 1099-NEC ready in January.

Reports that match the forms

Profit and loss, balance sheet, and your expenses aggregated by the exact line of the form they belong on.

English and Spanish

The entire product in both languages under one login. Form names stay in English so what you read matches what arrives in the mail.

Three things worth looking at closely

Payroll gets the two taxable wage bases right

A US paycheck has two different taxable bases, and they are not the same number. Section 125 benefits reduce both income tax withholding and FICA. A traditional 401(k) reduces income tax withholding but not FICA. Kangaroo tracks them separately, which is why boxes 1, 3 and 5 of your W-2 come out correct and why your quarterly 941 reconciles.

  • Social Security stops exactly at the annual wage base and resumes in January
  • Additional Medicare applied to the employee only, never matched by the employer
  • Interstate reciprocity agreements applied automatically where they exist
  • Every paycheck shows its full IRS worksheet, step by step

Sales tax knows where the sale belongs

A sale is taxed where the sourcing rule says it is — the buyer's address in most states, the seller's in a handful. On top of that sits the question of whether the item is taxable at all: services, groceries, clothing and software are treated differently state by state.

  • Rates applied per jurisdiction: state, county, city and special district
  • Category rules so a service line and a goods line on the same invoice are treated correctly
  • Exemption certificates recorded per customer with expiry tracking
  • A frozen breakdown on every invoice, so a later rate change never rewrites history

Your return is an aggregation, not an interview

Because every account carries its form line from the moment your business is created, the annual return is a sum of what you already posted. No reclassification, no shoebox, no three weeks of untangling.

  • Schedule C with every expense line mapped and the meals limit applied
  • Form 1065 and 1120-S with the per-owner Schedule K-1 allocation
  • Form 1120 with taxable income at the corporate rate
  • 1040-ES estimates with the safe harbor computed both ways

Who this is for

Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs

You file a Schedule C and pay self-employment tax, and you want the quarterly estimates to stop being guesswork.

S corporations

You need payroll running properly and the compensation-to-distribution picture visible all year, not reconstructed in March.

Partnerships and multi-member LLCs

You need Form 1065 and a Schedule K-1 per partner, on time, because every partner's own return waits on it.

C corporations

You want the books clean, the 1120 computed from them, and the payroll for owner-employees handled in the same system.

Businesses selling into several states

You want to know where you have obligations before a state tells you, and to collect correctly where you're registered.

Spanish-speaking owners

You run your business in Spanish but file in English. The product does both, and never invents Spanish names for US forms.

How the demo works

It's a working session, not a slide deck. Thirty minutes, by video, with your own situation on screen.

  1. 1

    You tell us your setup

Entity type, state, employees or contractors. Two minutes and we know what you're dealing with.

  2. 2

    We generate your calendar live

Your actual filing obligations and due dates, produced from what you just told us. Most people find at least one they weren't tracking.

  3. 3

    We run a real calculation

A payroll run or a return, with the worksheet open, on numbers that look like yours. You see exactly how each figure is produced.

  4. 4

    You ask whatever you want

Bring the question you've been meaning to ask someone. Half the value of the call is usually here.

No slide deck, no follow-up sequence, no pressure. If it isn't a fit, we'll tell you on the call.

Questions people ask before booking

I already have a CPA. Does this replace them?

No — it makes them faster and cheaper. What your CPA charges most for is untangling a year of scattered records. Clean books already mapped to form lines remove that work entirely, and they get to spend the time on the planning that's actually worth paying for.

I'm an LLC. Which setup is that?

LLC is how you're organized under state law, not how you're taxed. An LLC can be taxed as a sole proprietorship, a partnership, an S corporation or a C corporation. On the demo we'll pin down which election you actually made — for a lot of people that turns out to be the most useful part of the call.

Do you support payroll in my state?

All 50 states and DC: withholding structure, unemployment wage base and rate, disability and paid-family-leave contributions where the state has them. Tell us your state on the call and we'll run a paycheck in it.

My books are behind. Is it too early?

It's the best time. Most people who book are behind — that's usually why they book. Bring what you have; messy real data makes the demo far more useful than tidy hypothetical data.

How long does setup take?

Creating your business and getting your chart of accounts, calendar and state rules takes about five minutes. Bringing in history depends on how much there is, and we'll give you a straight answer on the call once we've seen it.

What does it cost?

Plans start at $29/month for a sole proprietor or single-member LLC with no employees, and $79/month once you're running payroll. Every form your entity requires is included — no per-filing fees, no April surcharge. We'll confirm which plan fits on the call.

Can I use it in Spanish?

Yes. The entire product is in English and Spanish under the same login, and you can switch at any time. Form names stay in English on purpose so what you see matches what arrives in the mail.

What happens to my data if I leave?

You export it whenever you want, in full. Nothing is held hostage.

Thirty minutes to see your own year laid out

Your obligations, your dates, your numbers — generated from your actual setup while you watch. Whatever you decide afterwards, you'll leave the call knowing exactly where you stand.

  • Free, with no card and no commitment
  • A working session, not a sales pitch
  • A straight answer on whether it fits you
